Day 1: There’s more to this than meets the eye.
There is a video screen in the front of the room and a mix of people around a group of tables. It turns out that Distance Learning – between Akron, Elyria and Youngstown – is to be a part of our experience. The video is a little distorted, many voices melding into a low roar with single voice breaking through sporadically.
After a few minutes, Don intervenes, and the decibel level goes down. Don has a lot to say, and he says it loud and forcefully. We each received a Notebook (to keep) and a series of handouts. The first third of the class is devoted to Don’s throwing out various tidbits, such as “Don’t listen to the news – it is not a realistic picture of the job market!”and “Think from the employer’s perspective!” and his instructions for the Library tour. Follow up:
Then we go around the tables, including those in the other locations, introducing ourselves, telling what work we have done and what we are looking to do. Don takes careful notes about each person. Since networking and an alumni group are part of this package, this process introduces class members to each other, in addition to allowing Don to assess how well and concisely we present ourselves; after all we must be able to market ourselves to prospective employers.
At the end, Don returns to the library tour. He hands out ‘Application for Employment’ forms, telling us that we need to have them completed by the next Monday and saying that we should not write on them as we will be going over them tomorrow in class. Don also announces that we need to have a draft resume ready for the Library tour.
Most people probably feel confused and somewhat over- or under-whelmed. Let’s hope the Distance Learning equipment works better tomorrow.
